Mouth sore treatment from Moye's Compounding Lab

"Doctor formulated mouthwashes and oral rinses prepared to speed up the healing process of mouth sores and oral ulcerations"

The technical term for mouth sores is stomatitis. Confusing I know! Sounds like it should have something to do with the stomach, right? The term refers to irritation of the mucous membranes (mucositis) in the affected areas. This happens when cells of the mucous linings aren't replaced as quickly as needed.

Oral ulceration can be caused by a number of disease states and can often be recurrent.

Oral ulceration can be present in patients undergoing:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation
  • Bone-marrow transplant

Can also occur in disorders such as:

  • oral infection
  • allergic stomatitis
  • aphthous stomatitis (aphthous ulcer)
  • Behcet's Disease
  • can appear in AIDS patients

These sores can be disabling to the patients, interfering with customary activities such as speaking and eating which can lead to nutritional problems.

Compounding pharmacists can have a great impact on patients' everyday quality of life when it comes to treating this condition. Mouthwashes and rinses can be compounded to help ease the pain associated with the ulcer and, in some cases, to help prevent or cure the problem.

In the past, many mouthwash products have been formulated by numerous medical centers to combat oral ulcerations; and we, at Moye’s Compounding Lab, in working with physicians, have been successfully compounding these formulas to speedup the healing process. Names of a few of these formulations include:

  • Mouthwash #1
Tetracycline, Nystatin, Hydrocortisone (antibiotic, antifungal, steroid)
  • Mouthwash #2
    Nystatin, Dyclonine, Glycerin (antifungal, anesthetic)
  • Mouthwash #3
Tetracycline, Nystatin, Hydrocortisone, Benadryl (antibiotic, antifungal, steroid, antihistamine)
  • Mouthwash #4
Tetracycline, Nystatin, Hydrocortisone, Chlorpheniramine (antibiotic, antifungal, steroid, antihistamine)
  • Mouthwash #5
Tetracycline, Nystatin, Hydrocortisone, Chlorpheniramine (antibiotic, antifungal, steroid, antihistamine)
  • Magic Mouthwash #1
Maalox, Benadryl, Lidocaine (antacid, antihistamine, anesthetic)
  • Magic Mouthwash #2
Mylanta, Benadryl, Carafate (antacid, antihistamine, anesthetic)
  • Miracle Mouthwash
Tetracycline, Nystatin, Dexamethasone, Benadryl (antibiotic, antifungal, steroid, antihistamine)

Most of these concoctions contain a combination of an antibiotic (to reduce the bacterial flora in and around the lesion), antihistamine (for local anesthetic and relief from pain and discomfort), antifungal (to stop any fungal growth), steroid (to reduce inflammation) or local anesthetic/pain reliever.

Through a triad relationship (patient, physician, pharmacist), we have a great opportunity to help patients prevent, suppress or cure mouth ulcerations by compounding the mouthwash that exactly suits the needs of each individual patient -ingredients can be eliminated or added, as needed.
